Large Skipper

Description

A small yellowish-brown, butterfly, with a short antenna. Males have a broad black androconial streak on the upperside forewing. There is a distinct brown border. The hindwing underside has a greenish tinge, with pale spots. The prominent markings and larger size enables separation from other similar species in the genus Thymelicus.

Habitat Requirements

Grassy locations, usually amongst scub and often with damp areas.

Observations

This butterfly is a powerful flyer and males demonstrate territorial behaviour. It seems to be more frequently encountered resting on foliage, rather than on flowers, although it will nectar on flowers such as Scabious.
