Meadow Brown

Maniola jurtina (Linnaeus, 1758)

Status

Description

A medium sized brown butterfly, flying in grass meadows. The forewing has a medium sized black spot, white-pupiled, upperside and underside. Males have a dark brown upperside, and the slightly larger female has a large orangish patch on the forewing. The underside is similar, the forewing is chestnut coloured with a brown border, whilst the hindwing is brown, with a paler submarginal band. Whilst the markings are variable, it shouldn’t be confused with any other species in Corfu.

Observations

Not nearly as dominant in the Corfu butterfly species community as it is in the assemblages of other more industrialised nations. This probably indicates that the butterfly fauna is a lot healthier in Corfu than is the case in many other parts of Europe.
