Southern White Admiral

Limenitis reducta Staudinger, 1901

A medium sized black butterfly with prominent white spots and bands. The underside is whiter and browner than compared with the upperside. The markings are quite distinctive, and there is no other similar species in Corfu.

Habitat Requirements

Most places where the host plant grows.

Larval Foodplants

Perfoliate Honeysuckle Lonicera caprifolium, Lonicera etrusca, Lonicera implexa, Lonicera japonica, Honeysuckle Lonicera periclymenum - doubtfully present. Anne Sordinas observed oviposition on Lonicera japonica in Corfu.

A strong flying, territorial butterfly. Given that its host plant, Honeysuckle, can turn up anywhere in Corfu, this is also true of the butterfly. The stunning appearance of the Southern White Admiral makes it a popular subject for photography.

Anne Sordinas has made observations that suggest in very hot summers the larva aestivates in its self constructed hibernaculum, made from silk and the dead leaves of its host plant.
