Lattice Brown

Kirinia roxelana (Cramer, 1777)

Status

Description

A large butterfly, with a brown upperside with orange areas on the forewing. The forewing underside is plain chestnut coloured with a brown border, the hindwing is olive-brown with a series of large postdiscal black spots, white pupiled, ringed in yellow. There is a small black spot on the forewing on both sides, without a white pupil, which enables it to be easily distinguished from the smaller Lasiommata species. Females have more extensive orange areas on the forewing upperside.

Habitat Requirements

Wooded and shady hillsides.

Larval Foodplants

Heath False-brome Brachypodium pinnatum, False Brome Brachypodium sylvaticum.

Observations

A very secretive butterfly, that makes every effort to hide. It is very obvious that it sees humans and makes every effort to avoid being seen by them.
