Delattin's Grayling

Hipparchia volgensis (Mazokhin-Porshnyakov, 1952)

Status

Corfu Status: Present EU Red Data Status 2010: Least Concern

Description

A brown medium sized butterfly which normally rests with its wings closed, with the cryptically coloured underside blending well within the background. The upperside is brown, and orange spots little developed, with two black spots, white-pupiled. The hindwing underside is a uniform mottled brown, with no obvious lines or banding. The forewing is chestnut coloured with two black spots, white-pupiled. Males and females are similar. The hindwing underside enables separation from the similar H. senthes

Habitat Requirements

Often found on mountainous, rocky ground and frequently in the road, at these higher altitudes.

Larval Foodplants

Heath False-brome Brachypodium pinnatum, Yorkshire-fog Holcus lanatus.

Observations

The Graylings are a highly complicated species complex and it is possible that Corfu has more species of Hipparchia than those already recognised. However, in 2018 Ghavalas, N. & J.G. Coutsis published a paper confirming the presences of Delattins Grayling, based on examination of genetalia.
