Small Heath

Coenonympha pamphilus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Status

Description

A small chestnut coloured butterfly. The upperside is a plain chestnut colour, with a grey-brown marginal border. The forewing underside is chestnut, with a black spot, white-pupiled. The hindwing is greyish brown with a pale postdiscal streak. Males and females are similar. The markings are distinctive, so shouldn’t be confused with any other species in Corfu. 

Habitat Requirements

Found in dry grasslands, roadsides and cultivated areas.

Larval Foodplants

Anthoxanthum ovatum, Crested Dog's-tail Cynosurus cristatus, Cock's-foot Dactylis glomerata subsp. Hispanica, Annual Meadow Grass Poa annua.

Observations

Shows some seasonal dimorphism in wing colour.
