A new species of hawkmoth found on Corfu.

27/10/2023 Dr Dan Danahar

It was with great delight that we received photographs of the Elephant Hawkmoth (Deilephila elpenor) on our Facebook page from Corfu Butterfly Conservation member Gillian Dicks. These were taken by Gillian on her veranda back in the April of 2018.

We will of course search the entomological literature but initial views are that this is probably the first recorded example of this species on the island. If this is true, Gillian has discovered a new species of lepidoptera on Corfu, which is immensely exciting. You can now record any examples of this species on our website.

This is not the first time a new Hawkmoth species has been recorded on the island, Corfu Butterfly Conservation member Amanda Penman posted images of a male Eyed Hawkmoth (Smerinthus ocellatus) on our Facebook page on the 24th August 2021.
